Born Dec. 3, 1914, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Marion C. and Maude H. Cady Hawks, he married Pauline V. Braden on Sept. 2, 1939, in Burlington, Iowa. She died in October 1983. He also was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Surviving are one son, Russel Jr. and one daughter, Mrs. Robert (Marge) Von Boeckman; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Violet) Johnson; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was an inspector for Caterpillar Inc. for 28 years, retiring in 1979. He was a meat cutter for Armour Meat Packing Co. for several years.
He was a member of United Auto Workers Local 974 and Eagle's Club.
Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
