Pvt. Charles Clark(age 22), Battery H, 1st Pa Artillery was 19 yrs old when on 2 March 1863, along with Pvt William Dormody(age 19) of the same unit, were executed by hanging for the murder of a Hezekiah Stokes on 5 Sep 1862. According to the account of the hanging printed on the 1st page of the "American Commercial Advertiser" at Baltimore, MD on 5 Mar 1863, "The day was fair and beautiful.....". Witnessed by the Provost Guard and two companies of the 4th Delaware Regiment, drawn up in a hollow square, both "prisoners" made brief addresses. Pvt. Dormody protested his innocence while Pvt Clark admitted to stabbing the victim, but not with the intent of killing him. At 20 minutes to 2 O'clock the Provost Marshall, Capt T.B. Raulston, adjusted their ropes and two minutes later the "drop fell".
