Jennie Spring Edwards is the daughter of Josephus Berry Edwards and Harriet Newel (Bruce) Edwards. She died 01 Nov 1879 in the Isle of Wight, Liberty Co., GA after the birth of Blanche Lewis Shackelford, b. Sep 1879. Both of their bodies were buried "beneath a lovely old oak tree in a lovely old cemetery" as Jennie's daughter, Ruth (Shackelford) Hartsfield, remembered from her childhood.

Jennie's husband found out about her death when "Upon returning to Liberty County from a business trip, he took a hired buggy from the train station. As he was passing the cemetery, he noticed that a burial was taking place (or perhaps simply a fresh grave). When he asked the buggy driver who had died, he was told, 'A Mrs. Shackelford.'."

When I was searching for Jennie's and her infant daughter Blanche's gravestones, I did not find any markers for either one of them. I was told by the owner of the property where Old Dorchester Cem. is located that a farmer had removed gravestones from that cemetery to use as pig troughs - what a desecration!!! It's possible that their gravestones were some of those removed.

Henry and Jennie had 5 children:

Walter Josephus Shackelford (1871-1905)
Florence Gertrude Shackelford (1872-1910)
Ruth Shackelford (1874-1961)
Volney Dunning Shackelford (1876-1928)
Blanche Lewis Shackelford (1879-1879)
