James Shaffer

James Carroll Shaffer, Sr., age 79 of Ogallala, passed away on Tuesday, January 3, 2012 in Sterling, Colorado. He was born April 7, 1932 at McCook, Nebraska, the son of Carroll and Nona (Reynolds) Shaffer. Jim attended the Curtis High School, graduating in 1949. He joined the United States Navy in 1950 and served during the Korean Conflict being honorably discharged from active duty in 1954. After his discharge he worked as a delivery man for Fairmont Dairy and then a truck for the Old Home Bakery for over twenty years. Following his retirement he was employed by Ron Kalkowski on his farm south of Ogallala for many years. Jim belonged to the Ogallala Moose Lodge, the Ogallala Elks Club, VFW, American Legion and the Teamsters Union. His hobbies included gambling at casinos, activities at the Moose Lodge and spending time with family and friends. Jim enjoyed playing scratch cards and pickle cards and was known as "Legs". Survivors include: Special friend, Betsy Hasty of Ogallala Son, Jim and Roz Shaffer of Paxton, NE. Daughter, Joni and Mike Sigwing of Scottsbluff, NE. Son, Jeff and Jenny Shaffer of Las Vegas, NV. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jackie Shaffer; and a grandson, Matthew Shaffer. Visitation was held from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Gubser Funeral Home with cremation following. Memorial Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6th at the Gubser Funeral Chapel with Pastor Eric Wait of the New Hope Church officiating. Committal services were conducted at Ft. McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell, Nebraska at 2:30 p.m. with military honors rendered by the United States Navy and the Paxton American Legion Post # 303. A memorial has been established in Jim's name. Gubser Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements
