Findagrave contributor "Missouri Grave Girl - #47368542", reported on September 24, 2012: "My father and I searched the cemetery 9/22/12 and could not locate Mr. Dayton's stone."

UPDATE 2 July 2020: Thank you to Findagrave contributor Dianne Toombs ID# 49258859 who was able to find Reuben's headstone and added the photo to his memorial. She reported " headstone off by itself on east side of Cemetery. I believe after the civil war, he was the postmaster at Island City, MO which would be about 5 miles or so to the southwest of the cemetery."
** Yes there is record of him being postmaster there, copy of same attached to his Ancestry.com page.

Civil War Veteran Co G 38th Iowa Infantry "The Martyr Regiment" ------ From military records: Dayton, Reuben. Age 29. Residence Clermont,Iowa, nativity Ohio. Enlisted Aug. 14, 1862. Mustered Sept. 9, 1862. Discharged for disability April 1, 1863, New Madrid, Mo. ----- His brother Jonathan also enlisted into Co G 38th Iowa Infantry. Jonathan mustered out in 1865 in Houston,Tx. ------ The 38th Iowa was nicknamed the Martyr Regiment because over a third of its number died of disease in Louisiana & Mississippi in the latter months of 1863 shortly after the Siege of Vicksburg.Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so few able bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry.
