Joe Neal Bevers 82 of Amarillo died Sunday January 1, 2012.

Services will be at 2 PM Thursday in Griggs-Schooler-Gordon Pioneer Chapel with Robert Field officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.

Mr. Bevers was born October 13, 1929 in Lakeview. He graduated in 1948 from Hedley High School and joined the Navy. He retired from the Amarillo Fire Department as District Chief in 1989.

Mr. Bevers was baptized in Bolton Street Baptist Church. He taught firefighting classes at Amarillo College and he coached his children's ball teams at Kids Inc.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Brenda Gay Gray; a son Larry Glen Bevers; his mother Lola Bevers; his father J.C. Bevers; four brothers: Arthur Bevers, J.C. Bevers, Roy Bevers and Glen Bevers; three sisters: Arlene Bevers, Lorene Bevers and Jean Roan; and a granddaughter Akysha Ardell Gray.

Survivors include a son Gerry Bevers of Amarillo; a daughter Donna Rhea and husband John of Fort Worth; two brothers Leon Bevers of Hedley and Lewis Bevers of Clarendon; six grandchildren: Christopher Gray of Plainview, Micah Henderson of Trinity, Marca McCallie and husband Charlie of Flagstaff, Arizona, Erika Rhea and Matthew Rhea both of Lubbock and Christian Bevers of Amarillo; and four great-grandchildren: Aspen, Colt, Sierra and Blaise McCallie all of Flagstaff, Arizona.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM today at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice P.O. Box 950 Amarillo, Texas 79105; or American Lung Association of Texas 5926 N. Mo Pac Expressway Austin, Texas 78731.
