Dickin Medal Recipient. A wire haired terrier, Beauty belonged to William Barnet, the Superintendent of the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals a British veterinary charity. During the Second World War, Barnet, and therefore Beauty, served with a rescue squad dedicated to looking for animals trapped in rubble. In 1940, Beauty began digging the rubble with her team, her first rescue was a cat. She went on to rescue more than 60 animals and is regarded as a pioneer rescue dog for her efforts. She was awarded the PDSA in January 1945 "For being the pioneer dog in locating buried air-raid victims while serving with a PDSA Rescue Squad." Further awards included the PDSA Pioneer Medal, an award normally reserved for humans, and a silver medal inscribed "For Services Rendered" by the Deputy Mayor of Hendon, as well as being granted "...the freedom of Holland Park and all the trees therein." She died at age 11, her medals were retained by the PDSA and were loaned to the "The Animal's War" exhibitions at the Imperial War Museum.
