He graduated from Wasson High School in Colorado Springs in 1975 and from the University of Montana in 1984.
During this time Lew entered the Navy and served for 20 years as a helicopter and fixed wing pilot at various duty stations, including Bahrain during Desert Shield. After retirement, he worked as an Emergency Medical Services pilot where he met his wife, Rose.
Lew was proud of his three daughters and loved his family and friends whose steadfast support brought him through the difficult times.
After being diagnosed with cancer Lewis said, "Some people's lives are long and narrow, my life is wide and full". He lived a rich, full life, filled with love, laughter and integrity. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors, hunting, fishing and flying with those he loved.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Goure; daughters, Katie (Andrew) Hicks, Jennie Stanford and Kim (Rob) Barker; granddaughters, Lucy Stanford and Brielle Hicks; father, William Stanford; brother, Bill Stanford; and sisters, June McGrath and Peggy (John) Dyer.
His mother, Viola Stanford, preceded him in death.
A celebration of Lew's life will be held at the Squalicum Boat House in Bellingham, WA on Tuesday, May 31 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
