Mary was the daughter of John Harmon/ Harman (c.1819 - 25 July 1864) and Elenora Reed. John was born in Pennsylvania. He served during the Civil War as a Corporal in Co. H, 1st Regiment, Maryland Potomac Home Brigade, "Cole's Cavalry". He entered service on 25 Mar 1864 and was KIA in Kernstown, Virginia. Elenora applied for John's pension on 24 Sept 1864.

Mary sometimes went by her middle name of 'Jane'. She was 4 years old in the 1850 U.S. Census. Mary married Benjamin F. Clark (24 July 1840 - 30 Sept 1917) on 29 Nov 1864 in Washington County, Maryland.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, the widowed Mary was living in Funkstown, Washington County, Maryland, with her daughter, Nina, and her son, Omer.
