The fourth son of William and Polly (Graham) Braden, Robert grew up in rural Decatur Co., IN. His father died when the child was three years old, his mother living but six more years. Robert's uncle Walter Braden was appointed guardian of the six Braden children, subsequently purchasing 960 acres of land for his wards in what became Keokuk Co., IA.

Robert married Mary E. Dale in Decatur Co. on Aug. 1, 1856, taking his new wife to his IA land where he worked the ground into a prosperous farm.

At the onset of the Civil War, Robert enlisted in Co. "F" of the 33rd IA Infantry. He was discharged for a disability in Jan. 1863 at Helena, AR and returned to Keokuk Co. where he continued farming for many years. Shortly after 1900, the Bradens retired into the city of Martinsburg, where they affiliated with the Martinsburg Presbyterian Church. Later the couple, according to the church records, "eloped to the Baptist church."

Four sons and two daughters were born to this Braden-Dale union.
