Roger was the tenth of eleven children born to Ella Mae Ogden and George Silas Morlan. He was raised and went to school in southern Iowa. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Phillippines. He married Jessie Lavona Haynes on March 26, 1948 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Anamosa, Iowa. They had three children; Kitty Jean, Colin Bruce and Colleen Lavona. In 1999 they adopted their great grandson, Michael, whom they had rasied since he was an infant. At the time of his death, Roger was survived by 3 sisters living in Iowa; Evenlyn Jean Spring, Opal Carolyne Moore and Reva Mae Burgess. Besides his parents he was precided in death by siblings; Lorance Kenneth. Gertrude Aletha (Pink) Swimm, Cecil Loren, Lucille Maxine Duty, Max George, Erma Jessie Kilpatrick and Robert Lee.
He worked on farms and ranches and as a mechanic. In 1974 he started working for the Milwaukee Railroad, retiring as a roadmaster in 1986. Roger and Jessie moved to Roundup in 1989 where he enjoyed gardening and woodworking. He was involved in many volunteer projects and was chosed as Area II Senior Citizen in 1994. He was a member of the Roundup Methodist Church.

Roger was cremated and buried in a casket he made, and at her death, Jessie will rest beside him in Evergreen Cemetery in Sabula, Iowa
