Kenneth W. Henschel, 55, of 921 Deep Wood Drive, Mishawaka. Ind., a retired U.S. Air Force chaplain, died Friday night at the St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, Ind., following a seven-month illness.
He was born Nov. 12, 1930, in the Town of Herman, the son of Martha Ebeling Henschel and the late Melvin Henschel. He attended Schwartzwald schools and was a Kiel High School graduate. Mr. Henschel graduated from Concordia Theological Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., in 1960 and served as a Lutheran pastor and U.S. Air Force chaplain for 20 years, retiring in 1985 as a lieutenant colonel.
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Commendation and the Bronze Star medals. He was a pastor at Delleville, III. and Centralia, III., from 1960 to 1967.
On Dec. 11, 1983, he was married to Sheila Feltman in Mishawaka. Mr. Henschel was a member of the South Wisconsin District of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, and the Redeemer Lutheran Church in South Bend.
Survivors include his wife; his mother of Howards Grove; a daughter, Elizabeth Henschel of Harlan, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Lori Feltman of Mishawaka; three sons, James of Harlan, Peter of Milwaukee and Jonathan of Hastings, Minn.; a stepson, Nathan Feltman of Mishawaka; two grandchildren; a sister, Elaine Waack of Kiel; and two brothers, Jerome of Howards Grove and Marvin of Ponca City, Okla.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Howards Grove, the Rev. Darrel L. Bergelin, pastor, and the Rev. William N. Redeker, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
