Helen Merle Hickman Passes Away after Long Illness at Topeka Sanitarium

Miss Helen Merle Hickman, 21, daughter of Mrs Kitty Hickman, 1608 Highland Avenue, died of tuberculosis Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock at Hillcrest Sanitarium, Topeka.

Miss Hickman was born June 25, 1904 at Hunnewell, Mo, where she lived until her parents came to Salina in August 1923. She was a graduate of Shelbyville high school, class of 1921, and was a member of the high school orchestra and the dramatic club. The following year she attended Maryville college, Maryville, Tenn, where besides carrying a heavy course she was assistant instructor in physical training, a member of the college orchestra, and of the vesper choir.

Following her coming to Salina, she entered Kansas Wesleyan as a sophomore where she was prominent in college activities. During the year 1924-25 she held a position in the Salina schools, as a teacher in the South Santa Fe cottage, and although the youngest teacher in the system at the time, was given one of the highest ratings. Last September she returned to Maryville college to resume her work, entering as a special student on account of impaired health. During the first semester, however, she was forced by ill health to enter Hillcrest Sanitarium at Topeka where she received special treatment. Through months of sickness her sunny smile never failed. She is survived by her mother Mrs Kitty Hickman, two sisters Frances and Virginia and one brother, Charles.

The body will arrive this evening on Union Pacific train 103 and will lie in state at the Ryan Funeral Home until the hour of the funeral at 4:00 o'clock, Thursday afternoon at University Methodist Church, Rev Clark Buckner, pastor of Grand Avenue Church, Topeka, officiating assisted by Rev George M Boicourt. Interment will be at Gypsum Hill cemetery.

(Helen Merle was interred in Roselawn June 16, 1928, the 17th burial in the cemetery.)
