Walter Krajewski

Walter Krajewski, age 84 of 617 Logan Street, Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, November 11, 2001 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility after a lengthy illness.

He was born February 4, 1917 at the Kimball location in Crystal Falls, the son of the late Antony and Mary (Lach) Krajewski.

Mr. Krajewski attended the Crystal Falls schools and then began a life of interesting and colorful vocations.

On February 4, 1929 he married Fay Voelker of Alpha and they made their home in Crystal Falls.

He worked as a painter and decorator for most of his life starting out as a sign painter for area mines and the Iron County Road Commission where he made many of the distinctive black and yellow carved signs that once marked area points of interest. He also worked for the Proksch Contractors before starting his own painting business.

He was a showman at heart and showed movies in small town community centers and had his own hypnotist/magic show. He also had side shows and concessions with Skerbeck's carnival. In the 1970's he and his parents had their own small carnival that played in the area. He was a great circus fan and was instrumental in having many circuses play in the Crystal Falls area, giving it the reputation of being a great circus town.

He and a partner founded the Bargain Barn antique shop and he later opened "The Odd Shop" for antiques.

He helped manage the White Birch Haven Resort for many years where he was one of its greatest assets. He loved the outdoors and was especially fond of mushrooming.

His great passion was theatre pipe organs. He had a dream to find a home for an "orphaned pipe organ". To fulfill it, he first organized the procurement and refurbishing of the Crystal Theatre, doing most of the decorating himself. He then found and oversaw the restoration and installation of the mighty Moeller Theatre Organ. He was chairman of the Crystal Theatre Board from its inception until forced to resign due to ill health earlier this year. In 1994 he and the theater restoration committee were honored as "Citizens of the Year" by the Crystal Falls Lions Club.

He was one of the original founders of the Crystal Falls Historical Society and a history book of the area within himself. He was a great storyteller and was interviewed for a book by a presenter of the Smithsonian Institute for folkstories and legends of the U.P.

He was a member of the former Crystal Falls Kiwanis Club and attended the Lakeview Bible Church. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and the whole community.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Trojan.
