Baron Bergavenny (Abergavenny). 2nd Earl of Pembroke. 4th Lord Hastings.

John Hastings was the son of Laurence Hastings, 1st Earl of Pembroke, and his wife, Lady Agnes Mortimer, daughter of Roger Mortimer and Joan de Geneville.

He married 1st Margaret Plantagenet (a.k.s., Margaret of England, Margaret of Windsor), the 4th daughter of King Edward III and his consort, Philippa d'Avesnes, in Reading, on May 19, 1359. She died without issue.

He married 2nd Agnes Manny in July 1368. She was the daughter of Sir Walter Manny, K.G. and Margaret Plantagenet, who was the Duchess of Norfolk and a cousin of Edward III. They had a son, John Hastings.

He was a soldier who was knighted in 1369 (K.G.). He became Lieutenant (military governor) of English Aquitaine in 1372 but was captured by the Castilian fleet in the Battle of La Rochelle on June 22nd of that year. He was held captive for three years.

After he was released in 1375, he died in Picardy, while traveling from Paris to Calais, presumably after being poisoned by the Spaniards (Burke).

His body was returned to England and interred in the choir of the Friars Preachers (Blackfriars) church in Hereford.

He was succeeded by his son, John, who was born after he was captured. His son became the 3rd (and last) Earl of Pembroke.
