He was a naturalized citizen, originally from Lower Canada. As an Indian trader, he worked the Missouri, selling skins and goods for barter with the Indians in North Dakota. He owned land at Madison township, Fremont County, Iowa valued at $5,000: NW 1/4 of Section 26, township 67, range 42 andlots 7, 8,9 in Block 112 in Hamburg. Married a younger woman, Therese Sarah Leclair, 16, to remove her from a home where she was the youngest of several children and mistreated it is said. He died at 62 from an accident while their many children were young, the oldest only 16, then ages 15, 13, and 3 under 10. She was also 5 months pregnant with their son Vetal. She married that year to Clement Lamoreaux. Maud Valandry Ross (Mrs Jim) says says the original French name is "Vallandre, and that one is buried at Hamburg, Iowa".
