The Martin Messenger, April 4, 1924: "70 Years Ago. . . We are informed that Mrs. Mary Lessert expects to conduct a restaurant in the Webb building east of Cook's store."
From the Bennett County Booster, April 6, 1994. "Ran the Lessert Hotel and Restaurant". - granddaughter Dorothy Lessert. "Sam Lessert admired, courted and won the tall, graceful Mary Valandry." ~ French Indian Families..." Irma Miller. 1920 census she stated she was 51 as of 1-1-1920.
Name and date from a ground reading after 1974. Correct date and county from South Dakota Death Index, certificate #220592. Mary and Sam had seven children, Joe in 1888, Ben in 1889, Ed in 1891, Roy in 1894, Greeley in 1898, Ollie in 1903, and Mabel who died around one year of age. Their son "Roy" (Royal) was "lost in action" about 1917 during WWI, which led Mary to join the American Legion Auxiliary which was founded in 1919. The American Legion Auxiliary is the world's largest women's patriotic service organization. The original purpose of the Legion was to "preserve the memories and incidence...in the great war". Mary was buried at St. Mary's Cemetery which is located in Martin, Bennett County, SD. At the time of her burial, 1944, Egan Lessert was in charge of the cemetery. This cemetery had 90 graves in it with 3 being the graves of veterans as of 1941. The actual organization of the cemetery is unknown. Records were kept by the church. Religious affiliation: Episcopal.
