Sidney Burkett

Sidney Burkett, 87, of Port Lavaca, passed away Friday, Dec. 23, 2011. He was born Aug. 2, 1924, in White City to the late Sidney Norman and Annie Mae Ogden Burkett. He married Barbara Ann Ranly in August 1959. He served his country in the United States Navy, and worked as a dredge boat Captain with King Fisher Marine Service and was a member of Alamo Heights Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Judy Baker of Brunswick, Ga., and Sherry Ficklen of Victoria; sons, Sidney Gene Burkett and wife Gay of Dickenson, Dwayne "Buck" Burkett of Victoria and Mark Alan Burkett and wife Melissa of Midland; sister Vernice Williams of Pasadena; brothers, John Henry Burkett of Cedar Lane and Melvin Gene Burkett of Pearland; 7 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers; and 1 grand-daughter.
Visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2011 at Grace Funeral Chapel. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011 at Grace Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Tim Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery with military honors under the auspices of the Calhoun County Combined Honor Guard
Pallbearers: Dwayne Burkett, Larry Ranly, Melvin Gene Burkett, Robert Blakeney, Pete Hill and John Henry Burkett. Honorary Pallbearers: his grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Alamo Heights Baptist Church Building Fund.
Grace Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements.
