An amazing man. Besides being a father, pioneer and a physician/drugstore owner/surgeon, he was a metalsmith and he made many beautiful pieces of jewelry for his wives. He was supposedly a surgeon during the Civil War, for the south, but we can't find any real evidence to support that. He invented a gun that would shoot twice. He loved the magic of the woods and wilderness and he spent many months alone in the woods and of primeval Indiana. He would throw firebrands of meat into the woods to attract cougars and then he would wrestle them! Brave, but foolish: although I'm sure it was not his intent, his death was what we call today "suicide by cop." He was home on leave with his second wife and baby daughter -- they were over visiting at a friend's home near or in Humboldt, Pulaski, Missouri. He was given furlough to rest after working nonstop as a surgeon in the battle of Wilson's Point. Union troops found out there was a surgeon from the South. The Union troops gathered in front of the house where the Bartlett Hymers were visiting that evening, demanding that Bartlett come out of the house. His friends and family urged him to run out the back door, but he didn't. He grabbed a gun, saying "I'll never be another man's prisoner" and he went out front to meet them. Well, of course, they shot him.
He had originally been on the side of the North, since he hated slavery. But after Union Troops earlier had ransacked his house and terrorized his wife and baby, he chose to side with the gentler South.
