Vern was the son of Lawrence Leslie and Lelia Childers.

He married LaFern Linnell on October 10, 1942 in Roseburg. She died in 1980. He then married Evelyn Puser Townley on October 21, 1987 in Reno, Nevada. She Died in 2004.

He was a fire warden for the Douglas Forest Protective Association.

Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Linton of Eugene; Sandra Damon of Medford; and Beverly Dingle of Springfield; a sister, Ardath Waddle of Eugene; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A son, Rodney Childers, and a daughter, Leslie Childers, preceded him in death.

He was a wonderful, good-humored man, who loved being around his family. He was a terrific grandfather! He will be sorely missed.
