The soft curls clinging about his brow
are wearing a colder covering now,
are lying in deeper and sadder shade
than ever a little white bonnett has made.
The little blue cup, & the half worn shoes,
have each a tale of his life to tell
The earth is cold and the grave is deep
and my baby lies there fast asleep,
never to break from his dreamless rest
nor waken upon my breast
never to open his sweet blue eyes
this side of the gates of paradise
and here I kneel on my chamber floor
and tearfully look on the clothes he wore
softly kissing the little white bonnett
tenderly touching the dresses he wore
Til time and place and the drifted years
are swept aside in a storm of tears
