The Iberia Sentinel, January 25, 1940

Dale Wyrick, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Wyrick of the Wilson School district near Tuscumbia, succumbed at the Jefferson City hospital early Friday morning of burns suffered when his parents' home was destroyed by fire Thursday night.

The Wyrick home consisted of one large room with a lean-to room built on one side. It was in the side room where the fire, of undetermined origin, started. The door to the main part of the building, we are informed, had been barred up for the winter and entrance and exit were made through the side room. After the fire was discovered and while Mr. Wyrick was making a desperate effort to open the barred door, the youth excitedly attempted to make his escape through the side room which was a mass of flames. He made his way to the outside with his clothing all ablaze and ran some distance through the yard before his father caught him. The father carried him to a wood shed--in the 15 degrees below zero temperature--and wrapped him in gunny sacks. In the frigid weather, the parents and the child waited until help arrived.

Two neighbors, Rector Wilson and Brice Fischer procured a car and rushed the boy to the Jefferson City hospital where he died a few hours after his arrival.

Clarence Wyrick, the father, was badly burned ont he hands and face and remained at the hospital for treatment for awhile. Mrs. Wyrick and the other children of the family also received minor burns.

The farm home and all its contents we understand were destroyed by the fire.

Later--both Mr. and Mrs. Wyrick and the other two children are in the Jefferson City hospital, Mr. Wyrick having developed pneumonia. Mrs. Wyrick and the little daughter, who were also burned, are reported to be getting along nicely.

The Eldon Advertiser, October 1930
