Samuel Alton Noel was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, Feb. 26, 1868, when his mother was visiting her parents. He was the son of William H. and Catharine A. Noel. He came to Ligonier Valley as a child and resided in the area since that time.

Alt farmed in Derry township for 27 years, specializing in the raising of strawberries. The locals called him "Strawberry Noel."

He retired in 1938 from farming. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

At the age of 90, after spending the previous day picking black walnuts with one of his grandsons, Samuel Alton died at his home, 1034 Hillview Ave., Latrobe, on September 24, 1958, at 6:30 a.m.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two twin sons.

He was survived by his widow, four daughters, two sons, 14 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren. Four brothers and one sister also survived.
