Austin Clary, 67, Died In Veterans' Hospital; Burial Was Monday
Austin Clary of northeast of Edina, 67 years old, a World War I veteran, died at 8:38 o'clock last Thursday evening, Feb. 23, 1956. Death came at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, where he had been a patient since Jan 5. He was a native and lifelong resident of Knox County, where he was a farmer and a motor grader operator for the county until his illness. The body was brought to the Hudson Funeral Home here after death.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Assembly of God Chuch of which Mr. Clary was a member, by the Rev. Merle J. White, pastor. The Knox City American Legion, of which Mr. Clary was a member, conducted military rites at the grave in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, northeast of Edina, where burial was.
Mrs. Clary and a daughter, Joan and two sons, Robert and Gerald Clary, at home and a step-son, John James McAllister, of the marines, stationed at Okinawa, survive. Two brothers and two sisters also survive: Bruce and Ralph Clary of near Edina and Mrs. Pansy Morrison of Rutledge and Nell, Mrs. Newbrey Woodward, of near Edina.
Mr. Clary was born Jan. 18, 1889, one of seven children. He was a son of Samuel Clary, a Civil War veteran, and Mary E. Parrish Clary, and was married Sept. 26, 1934, to Lethia Hazel McAllister.
One brother, Garland Samuel Clary, died Jan. 6, 1929. The father, Samuel Clary, one of the last two remaining Civil War Veterans, died Nov. 3, 1933; the mother, Nov. 29, 1944, and the other brother, Ulysses Grant Clary, Dec. 22, 1954.
