A horrible and fatal accident occurred at McCutchenville Thursday of last week in which Mrs. Eli Heilman, an aged and highly respected resident of that place, was burned to death. Mrs. Heilman occupied a suite of rooms over the hardware store of G.W. Cypher. About 8 o'clock Thursday morning she arose, attired only in her night dress, and went to the kitchen to build a fire in the cook stove. After placing some wood in the stove, Mrs. Heilman poured on some kerosene. The top of the can containing the fluid came off and a quantity of it splattered over the front of her gown. She struck a match with which to light the fire and the head of the match broke off, igniting her gown. Mrs. Heilman was instantly enveloped in flames but had presence of mid to run to a window, which she knocked out to attract the attention of Mr. Cypher, who was in his place of business below. Mr. Cypher ran out to ascertain the cause of the crash and was horrified to see Mrs. Heilman standingin front of the window in flames. He ran upstairs, and trying the door, found it locked on the inside. He hammered on it and Mrs. Heilman opened it. He found the poor woman writhing in agonizing suffering. He hastly extinguished the flames and summoned Dr. C. A. Heaton, but the fire fiend had done its work. All that the loving care of her friends and neighbors could do to alleviate her suffering was of no avail, death coming as a merciful relief three hours later. She was conscious almost to the last, relating to her friends how the accident occurred. The unfortunate woman was about seventy-six years of age. Her husband died three years prior to her death.
