Melvin K. (Mel) Dawson, 84, of Monticello, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2011, at St. Elizabeth East in Lafayette.

Born Jan. 13, 1927, in Wolcott, he was the son of the late Lloyd R. Dawson and Mabel A. (DeMoss) Dawson. He resided in White County area most all of his life

On Dec. 12, 1948 in the old Christian Church on Bluff St. in Monticello, he married Betty J. Hinkel. She survives.

Mel was a 1945 graduate of the Chalmers High School. He went straight into the US Army serving the end of WWII. Upon finishing boot camp he went to Washington D.C. to protect the White House and served as a guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Once he fulfilled his tour of duty he returned home to farm in White, Carroll and Jasper Counties. Mel farmed for over 40 years, upon retiring from farming he went on to drive Motor Coach for Imperial Travel out of Lafayette, Indiana for 11 years. Mel was very active in the Monticello Christian Church, where he served in many committees, as a trustee, and had served on the general board. The church was Mel's life, first and foremost nothing else ever came before his church. Mel's biggest enjoyment in life was his family though.

Surviving are a daughter, Tanetta S. "Tanny" Dawson-Synder of West Lafayette, Indiana; son, Todd A. (wife Jan) Dawson of Warsaw, Indiana; Grandchildren, Lucas Dawson of Cincinnati, Ohio, Katherine and Samantha Dawson of Warsaw, Indiana.

A sister Donna Altman preceded in death.

Visitation 11 a.m. until the time of service at the church at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, at the Monticello Christian Church located at 1002 Airport Rd. Monticello, Indiana. Burial at I.O.O.F. Riverview Cemetery of rural Monticello. Full military rites at the cemetery with the Honor Guard of the Monticello American Legion, Amvet, and VFW posts.

Memorials: Monticello Christian Church Building Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church.
