Anchorage resident John Jacob Herda, 89, died peacefully in his sleep Nov. 20, 2010, at a private assisted living center in Anchorage from complications brought on by a stroke. A funeral Mass was at Holy Family Cathedral.
Mr. Herda was born July 27, 1921, in Lonsdale, Minn., and was raised on a farm with his 12 brothers and sisters. He received a bachelor's degree in theology from Saint Procopius College in Chicago at about the same time America joined World War II after Pearl Harbor. Mr. Herda enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed on various islands in the Aleutian chain with the Army Air Corps. Shortly after the war, he moved to Anchorage permanently. In 1960, he married Marcella, whom he'd known since high school in Minnesota. Together they had four sons: John, Joe, Jim and Jay. Mr. Herda worked as a contractor clearing roads, townships and power lines in Alaska's territorial days. He later became a surveyor for the City of Anchorage and continued to help develop the infrastructure of the city until his retirement in 1985. Mr. Herda supported the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts while his sons were members and was an active member of the Catholic church in Alaska for more than 50 years. He enjoyed feeding the moose on the family's property and was an avid gardener, regularly winning ribbons at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Shenandoah Herda of Sydney, Australia; his son, Jay Herda of Anchorage; his daughter-in-law, Laurie Herda of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters in Alaska; and six brothers and sisters in the Lower 48. Mr. Herda lived a long and happy life and his family misses him dearly. Arrangements were with Evergreen Memorial Chapel. Visit the online memorial at legacy.com
