Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 20 at 10 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in New Prague, with Rev. Kevin Clinton officiating. Interment will be at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery in New Prague. Pallbearers will be Joel Bartos, Ethan Bartos, Darian Bartos, Kim Bergstedt, Ann Slavik and Natasha Surtrenant.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague.
Born March 20, 1918 at Lonsdale, Helen, also known as "Helenka" and "Grammie B," was a daughter of John W. and Anna (Trnka) Herda. She graduated from Good Counsel Academy in St. Cloud and married John J. Bruzek on February 25, 1941 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale. She was a nanny for more than 20 years in 36 states, caring for 600 children including 30 sets of twins and 200 newborns. She was also a surgical technician at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague. Helenka was an active member of the St. Wenceslaus Martha Choir for many years and a member of the New Prague Czech Singers and Czech Dancers, Third Order Franciscans, New Prague Senior Citizens and the Neuman Center Choir in St. Cloud.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann "Bette" (Vern) Bartos, Avon; a son, Gregory Jon Bruzek, Minneapolis; three brothers, Joseph Herda, Winsted, John J. Herda, Anchorage, AK and Robert (Jeannie) Herda, Burnsville; six sisters, Sister Jonathan Herda, O.S.B., St. Cloud, Marie Kajer, New Prague, Ludmilla Jacobs, Anchorage, AK, Marcella Catalano, Orange, MA, Elizabeth Suel, Bellingham, WA, and Theresa (George) Gucker, Meyers Church, AK; three grandchildren, Darian, Ethan and Joel Bartos; and two great-grandchildren, Kayte Lyn and Bayan.
She was preceded in death by her husband on December 12, 1991; her parents; a sister, Sr. Debora Herda, O.S.B.; and two brothers, Wenceslaus "Jim" Herda and George Herda.
