Susan Carr Edwards was a daughter of Captain John Edwards, who served the United States in the war against Great Britain in 1812 and in the Mexican War in 1846. Her mother was Martha (Johnston) Edwards, a daughter of James Johnston, who served in Washington's bodyguard from 1777 to 1779, and later served under LaFayette and under General Green at Guilford Court House. He received a wound in the knee at the siege of Yorktown, which partially disabled him and was the cause of the granting to him of a pension by the State of Virginia in 1832.
