Mr. Cowan was a coal miner and operator for many years in Allegany Co MD and Ohio Co WV. He operated mines near Eckhart from 1830 to 1855, when he moved to Wheeling, WV, and continued in the coal business. He married Clementine Sherrer, probably around 1827, and they had seven known children:
