Shirley Virginia Meinert, 86, of DeKalb, Ill., died Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Bethany Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, DeKalb.
Born Oct. 24, 1925, in Davenport, Iowa, the daughter of Emil J. and Eulalia A. (Brasch) Anderson, she married Louis William Meinert on July 4, 1952, in Davenport, Iowa.
Shirley was employed by Northwest Bank of Davenport for 10 years, later at Northern Illinois University in the Provost Office and then as secretary for Robert Brigham, athletic director. She later worked for the Illinois Department of Public Aid, retiring in 1985. Shirley was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, DeKalb.
She is survived by her husband, Louis; children, Marjorie (Dale) Gommel of DeKalb, Mary (Alan) Bauer of Sycamore and Mark (Bonnie) Meinert of Davenport; five grandchildren, Matthew Meinert, Elizabeth, Nick and Nathan Bauer and Megan Gommel. Shirley was very proud of her "Smart Cookie" great-granddaughter, Marah Bauer, and her dog, Annie.
She is also survived by a brother, Dennis (Donna) Anderson of Davenport; a sister, Mary Lue (Gene) Rock of Letts, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Emil Anderson Jr. and David Anderson; and two sisters, Lillian Jean Anderson and Betty Mae Anderson.
Shirley's family will receive family and friends at her home from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17. Cremation has taken place at the Anderson Funeral Home Crematory. Interment of cremated remains will be at Rock Island National Cemetery at a later date.
