Born June 26, 1923, in Davenport, the son of William and Ella H. (Miller) Meinert, he married Shirley Virginia Anderson on July 4, 1952, in Davenport. Louis enlisted in the U.S. Navy in June 1941. During World War II aboard the USS San Juan CL 54, he saw action in three major battles: Midway, Coral Sea and Guadalcanal. Following electrical training in 1943 at Iowa State University, he served aboard USS Altair AD 11, which went to Africa and Europe. After his reenlistment in the Naval Reserve, he taught BEEP school in Davenport, Burlington and Great Lakes, retiring in 1983 as master chief petty officer.
After careers at power generating stations and maintaining public schools, Louis was employed until 1991 as building operations engineer at Northern Illinois University. In DeKalb, he served on several civic committees, including DeKalb Blue Ribbon Water Committee and Energy Conservation Committee, and was a citizen advisor to the school.
Louis was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. As a VFW life member, he served on honor guards at many funerals. He was a master Mason of DeKalb Lodge 144, a 33rd Degree Mason, received his 60-year membership pin, high priest of DeKalb Chapter Royal Masons and past commander of Sycamore Commandery 15. Louis received the Order of High Priest Hood, Kych Knight of York Cross of Honor OPC, and the Order of the Purple Cross. Louis was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was past Watchman of Shepherds for the Order of the White Shrine 47.
He is survived by his children, Marjorie (Dale) Gommel of DeKalb, Mary (Alan) Bauer of Sycamore, and Mark (Bonnie) Meinert of Davenport; five grandchildren, Matthew Meinert, Elizabeth, Nick and Nathan Bauer, and Megan Gommel; great-granddaughter, Marah Bauer; sister, Grace Haller of Davenport; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, on December 12, 2011, and brother, Victor R. "Bob" Meinert.
The memorial service with Masonic rites will be 1:30 p.m. July 28 at Anderson Funeral Home, DeKalb, with full military honors. Visitation will be noon to service time at the funeral home.
