Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a First Sergeant in the Union Army in Company A, 29th Massachusetts Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on November 29, 1863 at Fort Sanders, Knoxville, Tennessee. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 17th Mississippi Infantry (C.S.A.)."
