Harriet Ann was named for her mother's sister, Harriet Judith Armstrong, who married Andrew Rodden in 1835. She died about 1840 after the birth of their son, William Robert.

In 1841, the recently widowed Andrew Rodden married his widowed sister-in-law, Cynthia Armstrong Beaty, who was Harriet Ann's mother. Harriet Ann began using the Rodden surname at the time of this marriage. No legal adoption records or name change located.

Harriet Ann first married Elisha Kerley who died in April 1864 while a POW in a Union prison. They had no children together.

However, Elisha's Will mentions Finley Davidson, son of Cynthia Davidson, as heir. Finley was probably the illigetimate son of Elisha Kerley and Cynthia Davidson born out of wedlock. Cynthia's other son, William Jefferson Davidson, is not mentioned in Elisha's Will. 1850 Census shows Cithia Davidson, age 18 and born about 1832, living in household of her parents, Alfred & Martha Davidson, with 3 of her siblings. It shows Cithia's place of birth as Virginia. Cithia Davidson is shown as mother on death certificate of Thomas Jefferson Davidson, born about 1855 and died 29 Jul 1937, in Sugarloaf, Alexander County, NC and his Father's name is shown as Unknown.
