Cynthia Armstrong was a daughter of John Armstrong and wife, Nancy Agnes Beaty Armstrong, of Mecklenburg County NC.

Two marriage bonds are on file in North Carolina for Cynthia and both were issued in Mecklenburg County. Alexander County NC was formed in 1847. Therefore her marriage bonds issued in 1839 and 1841 in Mecklenburg County do not necessarily show that she lived in the Charlotte NC area.

Cynthia married William P. Beaty (who may have been a relative on her mother's side) on 7/25/1839 in Mecklenburg County NC with Mr. William Boyles as bondsman on the marriage bond. William died soon afterward. He and Cynthia had no children.

Second marriage to Andrew Rodden on 14 Jun 1841 in Mecklenburg County NC. He was married to her deceased sister. Cynthia's sister, Harriet Judith Armstrong, had married Andrew Rodden on 26 Jan 1835 in Mecklenburg Co NC. Harriet and Andrew had a son, William Robert, born about 1840. This is the only other marriage record located for Cynthia in North Carolina.

Andrew was definitely not the biological father of Cynthia's daughter, Harriet Ann, who was born about 1828-1830. However, Harriet Ann used his surname after Cynthia and Andrew married.

Andrew is not shown in any Census records after 1840.

In the 1850 Census, Cynthia was head of her household with her two children (shown as Harriet Rodin, age 19, and Robert Rodin, age 3) in Alexander County NC so it is assumed that Andrew died between their marriage in 1841 and the date of the 1850 Census.

In the 1860 Census, Cynthia is shown as C.C.Rodden, age 50, living in Alexander County NC. A 13-year-old male shown as R.C. Rodden is shown living with her and this is presumed to be her son.

The 1870 Census shows Cynthia living in the household of her daughter, Harriet A. Rodden Kerley, in Sugarloaf Township of Alexander County NC. This is the last Census that includes Cynthia so it is presumed she died after the 1870 Census but before the 1880 Census.

Since Andrew Rodden's family spelled their surname as Rodden, I am spelling Cynthia's surname the same way. One census record shows it as Rodin but Cynthia may not have been able to read or write or spell her name for verification with the census taker. Several documents at courthouse also show Rodin but that may have been at the discretion of person recording the information.
