George F. Sander, son of Christoph and Caroline Schultz Sander, was born May 24, 1876 in Springfield, Grand Meadow township, Clayton county. On September 17, 1876 he was baptized in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Postville and on April 10, 1892 was confirmed in the same church. He spent his youth in the vicinity of Postville.

On February 23, 1906 he married Augusta Kamps. They were the parentse of three daughters. Following their marriage, they moved on a farm four miles east of Postville where they stayed three years; from there they moved to a farm one mile north of Hardin on which they lived 32 years. In 1949 they moved to Luana. In Luana he was engaged in carpentering for a number of years, retiring about six years before his death.

Mr. Sander was a long time member of St. John's brotherhood. He suffered a stroke three weeks before his death, followed by a second stroke. He died Thursday night, January 29, 1959, at 11:35 p.m. having attained the age of 82 years, eight months and seven days.

Funeral services were held at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana on Sunday, February 1, 1959. The Rev. L. W. Reuther, pastor of St. John's, was in charge. Burial was in the Lutheran cemetery in Luana.

He was survived by his widow, three daughters, Mrs. Martha Heins of Postville, Mrs. Mable Gordon of Luana and Mrs. Dorothy Nuehring of Elkader; two brothers, Carl and Eldo of Postville; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Foels of Postville and Mrs. Mahala Meyer of Luana; 10 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
