Kemper Hampton Is Taken by Death
Kemper Houston Hampton, 79, well known Galax citizen and former Grayson county farmer and livestockman, died about eight o'clock this morning (Monday) in Waddell hospital, where he had been a patient for several weeks. Mr. Hampton had been in declining health for some time, although he had been remarkably active for his age until a comparatively short while ago.
Before moving to Galax, where he had resided for several years on Painter street, Mr. Hampton resided near Baywood, at "Round Meadows," the old Hampton homestead, where he was born.
Mr. Hampton was a son of the late Capt. Litrille Hampton and wife, Mrs. Nancy Blevins Hampton.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Annie Nuckolls Hampton; four sons, Dr. C. L. Hampton, Galax; Litrille Hampton and Raleigh Hampton, both of Kingsport, Tennessee, and Rev. Bernie H. Hampton, pastor of the Methodist church at Pennington Gap; two daughters, Mrs. R. Swanson Kyle, Galax, and Mrs. Thelma Niette, Columbus, Georgia; one brother, Granville Hampton, Independence; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were incomplete when the Gazette went to press this afternoon, although it was known that interment would be in the Hampton family cemetery at "Round Meadows" near Baywood. (Copied from the Galax Gazette, Galax, Virginia, Monday, April 20, 1953, page 1)
