Born September 25, 1923, he was one of eleven children of the late William Lafayette and Eltia Emelia (Karachuf) Bechtel.
Maynard was a veteran of WWII and served in the U.S. Navy as an armed guard on Merchant Marine Ships.
After earning his degree in Machine and Tool Design from Penn State University, he was employed for more than 30 years with the U.S. Government's Department of Defense as a machinist and eventually a draftsman.
His memberships included VFW Post 2506, Hanover, Loyal Order of Moose #227, Hanover, and he was a former Free and Accepted Mason.
Maynard was an avid reader and enjoyed carrying on lengthy conversations. He also spent time going to auctions and looking for that unique item. Maynard had a great time participating in Karaoke, singing with family and friends.
In addition to his wife, Donna, Maynard is survived by three children, Barry Bechtel of Westminster, MD, Tamara Presti of Towson, MD, and Maynard G. Bechtel of Hanover; a sister, Phyllis "Dolly" Riley of Hanover; and four grandchildren, Lauren Townsend of Silver Spring, MD, Victor Presti of Towson, and Matthew and Dominic Bechtel, both of Westminster.
He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean (Quintella) Bechtel, who died August 29, 2000, and a number of brothers and sisters.
A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Bechtel will be held at 11 a.m., December 13, at the Wetzel Funeral Home, Hanover, with the Rev. Dennis E. Fulk officiating. Burial will be private in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover.
