After Valentine's death on Jan 7 1812 in Hecktown, PA , Mary joined her children in Granville, OH area about 1819, her children resided in Ohio about 1905 . "Mary Goss was married three times;
#1 William Davidson: married abt1775 Wilkes Barre, PA
#2 Lemuel Gibbons: married abt 1780 Granville, MA
#3 Valentine Santee: married by March 1800 in Huntington, PA

Mary was the eighth of twelve children, and third daughter, born to Philip Goss IV and Mary Kendall. Her siblings: Sarah, Philip V, Experience, Comfort, Nathaniel, David, Solomon, Hannah, Ebenezer, Mercy, Abel and Levi.

Interestingly, Mary was born with a genetic condition known as polydactyly which means that she had an extra finger on each hand and an extra toe on each foot. Her son, William had the same condition which can be found in Mary's Kendall [maternal] ancestors and in Goss and Gibbons descendants to this day.

Mary's father moved the family to Wilkes Barre, PA by August, 1769. There she met and married William Davidson with whom she had a daughter, Mary, on August 20, 1775. William was killed [along with Mary's father, Philip Goss] by Indians on November 9, 1778. At this time Mary fled to safety in Granville, MA, to the home of her sister, Sarah Seward, wife of Enos. Mary appointed Enos guardian to her young daughter. She was now a widow with a toddler at age 21.

While living in Granville, Mary met and married Lemuel Gibbons with whom she had two children: Pamelia on June 5, 1781, and William Davidson Gibbons on August 27, 1783, whom she named after her first husband. no divorce record has been found, but when Enos and Sarah Seward [and family] returned to Pennsylvania in 1793, Mary probably went with them. There she met and married Valentine Santee. He died on January 7, 1812 in Hecktown, Pennsylvania.

Mary's children by Lemuel both moved to Granville, Ohio ,in about 1804/05. After Valentine's death in 1812, Mary followed, as she was received by letter to the Baptist Church on August 1, 1819

IT has been represented that Mary was a pauper at her death, no stone has been recorded or found for her. Town records show members of the Baptist church( Granville, Oh) cared for her during the last year of her life and that a local carpenter was paid to build a coffin for her. It is assumed that she was buried in the Old Burying Ground upon her death. (by Gayle Van Dyke)

3. William Jasper 1838-1864 IN

William had Anna sign a deed in Nov. 1827 at Granville regarding the sale of his farm. He then told her he was going to go visit his sister in Knox Co. Ohio and suggested she take his four children and stay with her brother in Newark, Ohio, and wait for his return. After Anna left, Wm. sold the contents of their home and took off for parts unknown. Anna then gave birth to John at her brother's home. On 22 Sep 1829 Anna filed a complaint against Wm in Newark complaining that he left her destitute and asking for a share of monies due her from the sale of the farm and the contents of the house.

William and Anna must have reconciled at some point as they deeded property in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, in 1835; Wm. purchased 160 acres in St. Joseph County, Indiana, in 1836; and received a land patent from the government for 160 acres in 1838. The 1840 census shows him with a wife, one child under five and two children -- one boy and one girl -- between 5 and 10]. Their first child, John, is listed as an 'idiot' in the census and it should be noted that William left property to be used for his care and support.

William served in the War of 1812. Rank: Private, in Capt. Levi Rose's 3rd regt, Ohio militia, commanded by Col. Lewis Cass. He volunteered with nephews Campbell and David Messenger Jr. Company commissioned June 1, 1812, Mad River. He was taken prisoner, possibly after the Fall of Detroit, as he is listed on U.S. Marshal's returns of enemy aliens and prisoners of war, 1812-1815, part one. In this record he reports that he was married and had 3 children.

William Davidson Gibbons died 9 Nov 1854, in Union Township, St. Joseph, Indiana. Anna died about 7 years later and is buried in the same cemetery.

Though no marriage record has yet been found, but based upon his first child's birthdate, Lemuel married Mary (Goss) Davidson, a widow, in about 1780. They had two children: Pamelia (b. 1781) and William Davidson (b. 1783). Though no divorce record has yet been found, Mary left the area in about 1790.

According to Goshen, CT vital records, Lemuel had at least one child with a woman named Vadeia: Larkin Green (b. 1795). There may have been another son, Lemuel (b. 1797) born just before he died.

There is no evidence that Lemuel ever owned land. The only public record is a court record that 12 jurors found that he was assaulted on October 23, 1789 in Blanford, MA.

There is a Goshen, Clearfield, Pennsylvania, and there is a West Goshen, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and there is a Goshen, Litchfield County, Connecticut. More research will find his place of death and burial place. The clue may be in a manuscript of Rev. Timothy Mather Cooley that recorded area deaths and funerals.

*Added "III" to Peter Gibbons name because of multiple men named Peter in the family.
