Carl Emerson Matthews, 72, of Columbus, died Wednesday, November 16, 2011. He was born on June 17, 1939 in Gallipolis to the late Stanley and Mamie (Thivener) Matthews. Carl graduated from Central High School, where he was pitcher on the baseball team and retired from the USPS as a mail carrier for the Lincoln Village and West Jefferson areas with 42 years of service. Carl enjoyed sports, including the OSU Buckeyes, horse racing, baseball and softball, which he also enjoyed coaching. Carl was the most kind-hearted man and always put everyone before himself. Carl was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather (Papa). Carl is preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Floyd "Buddy" Coleman (who was like a brother to him) and Ronald Floyd Coleman his close nephew. Carl is survived by Sandy (Browning) his loving wife of 51years. Two children, Sharon Overstreet of West Jefferson and Stanley (Nell) Matthews of Enon, Ohio; five grandchildren, Rosie Overstreet, Kasey, Joshua, Danielle, and Jeremy Matthews, siblings Darrell (Juanita) Matthews, Sandra Coleman and Randy (Sandy) Matthews, many nieces and nephews. Also, adopted daughter, Bonnie Halstead and long time special friend, Wade Franklin. A memorial service for Carl is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Heart Association in Carl's name. SCHOEDINGER HILLTOP CHAPEL is assisting the family.
