On October 26, 1899, in Troy, Newaygo county, Michigan, George married Maria Mina "Minnie" Ponton, the daughter of Napoleon Ponton and Emelie Mildred "Milley" Baker. At the time of the marriage George was 33 years old, Minnie was 12. Minnie's father had died in January 1897 and by 1899 her widowed mother was destitute without the necessary means to care for her four children. Wishing the best for her daughter Minnie, she gave her permission for George and Minnie to marry.
During the years 1900-1907 Minnie gave birth to four children: George Jr., Ray, Georgia, and Vera.
George and Minnie were married nearly 18 years. Their marriage ended with George's accidental death at age 51 in the railway yard at Mackinaw City, Michigan. He was employed as a flagman by the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railway and was killed when he got caught between two cars and both legs were severed. The railroad company had no family information on George and did not know how to reach his wife so they purchased a burial lot in the local cemetery and buried George in an unmarked grave.
