Dallas was the son of Perry Leatherman and Pearl Droud. He was married first to Mildred Gary (daughter of Todd W Gary and Alma Hossler) on 10 Nov 1934 in Elkhart, Indiana. They had six children:

His first wife preceded him in death. Dallas married a second time to Virginia F. Chupp Elliott Knoll in November 1977. While they were vacationing in Florida he passed away from a sudden heart attack. His funeral services were held Saturday, December 5, 1981 at 10:30 a.m. at Yoder-Culp Funeral Home. Rev. Robert P. Bischof of First Brethren Church in New Paris officiated.
