John B. Amon, 78, of 310 Fairground Road, Stoneboro, (Sandy Lake Township) died peacefully with his family by his side at 8:49 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5, 2011, in UPMC, Pittsburgh, after a brief illness. Born April 2, 1933, in Raymilton, Venango County, he was a son of Homer P. and Bernice Barnes Amon.

Mr. Amon was a life long dairy farmer and began farming on Mineral Ridge Farm (Mineral Township) with his father and grandfather and then, along with his wife and son Richard, continued owning and operating the family farm for over 30 years, retiring in 2001. He attended the Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, Stoneboro. John was a lover of the outdoors and spent many hours hunting and fishing, but most of all he was a loving husband and father and set a fine example for his children and grandchildren.

He was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, the Jackson Field & Stream Club and International Order of Odd Fellows, Sandy Lake Lodge 573. As an artist he produced several paintings, enjoyed family genealogy, gunsmithing, was an avid reader and liked spending time on the computer. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving during peace time.

His first wife, Mary E. McGhee, whom he married Jan. 16, 1960, preceded him in death June 3, 2001; he then married Margaret Ann (Corll) Carlson on Sept. 9, 2002, and she survives at home.

Also surviving is a daughter, Diana L. Amon of Reno, Pa.; four sons, John L. Amon and his wife, Margie, of Ennis, Texas, Jeffery L. Amon and his wife, Teresa, of Polk, Richard E. Amon and his wife, Clarissa, of Jackson Center and Samuel R. Amon of Mercer; nine grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Jean Zimmer of Sandy Lake.

Mr. Amon, was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, two infant grandchildren, a sister, Joan Jones and a brother, Donald Amon.

Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. Adam J. Rodgers, Pastor, Stoneboro Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment will be at Oak Hill Cemetery, Sandy Lake Township.
