Founder of Aberdeen, Ohio. American Revolutionary Veteran. James Edwards was born in Milntown, Corsindae, Aberdeenshire, Scotland to William Edward and Helen Law. In 1740, he was taken from Aberdeen and sold as an indentured servant to James "Parson" Keith in Fairfax, Virginia. He married Sarah Jacobs abt. 1750 and they had 10 children together. James Edwards served as a patrolman during the French and Indian War and then entered service on March 1, 1777 as a Private in the 1st Virginia State Regiment under Captain Thomas Hamilton, commanded by Colonel George Gibson. In 1786, James Edwards moved his entire family from Fairfax, Virginia to Kenton's Station, outside Washington, Kentucky. In 1796, he purchased 1,000 acres of land across the Ohio River from Maysville, Kentucky and founded the town of Aberdeen, Ohio, naming the town after his native homeland. He was buried in the Old Aberdeen Cemetery, located on his property, however, this cemetery was washed away after the Ohio River flood in 1937.

The headstone is an artistic recreation. The original stone was washed into the Ohio River during a flood in 1937.
