Pearl Edward Gilkey, age 79 of Urbana formerly of Athens died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006 at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Dayton. Born Sept. 20, 1926 in (Old Hastings Addition) Athens, he was the son of the late Guy F. & Esther Blanche Mehl Gilkey.
A 1944 graduate of Athens High School, Mr. Gilkey was employed at National Cash Register in Dayton for over 20 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was aboard ship in the Sea of Japan during the surrender at the end of the war.
Mr. Gilkey is survived by a daughter & son in law, Tamala & Bernard Tom of Urbana; a son & daughter in law, Charles & Debbie Gilkey of Parkersburg, WV; a granddaughter, Amber Gilkey and her fianc�, Sheldon Queen of Urbana; two grandsons & wives- Kevin & Lisa Gilkey of Little Hocking and Keith & Tara Gilkey of Charleston, WV; a sister & brother in law, Karen & Harve Jones of Athens; and a brother & sister in law, Gerald & Georgia Gilkey of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Besides his parents he is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Clara Virginia Coon Gilkey, who died June 30, 2006; a sister, Gladys Baker; three brothers- Allen, Merritt, and David Gilkey. Funeral service will be conducted Saturday 2:00PM at Jagers & Sons Funeral Home by Pastor David Cogar with burial in Athens Memory Gardens. Friends may call Saturday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by Athens American Legion, Athens VFW and Albany VFW Honor Guards.
