Merritt F. Gilkey, age 64, of Rutland formerly of Doylestown and Athens, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 2, 2005 at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis. He was born Feb. 4, 1940 in Athens, the son of the late Guy F. & Esther Blanche Mehl Gilkey. He retired in 2003 as a machinist from BWX Technologies in Barberton after 33 years of service. Mr. Gilkey was a 1958 graduate of Athens High School and a member of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Shipbuilders, Blacksmiths, Forgers and Helpers Local 900. He is survived by a sister, Karen (Harve) Jones of Athens; three brothers, Pearl (Virginia) Gilkey of Urbana, Gerald (Georgia) Gilkey of Colorado Springs, CO and David Gilkey of Middleport; several nieces & nephews, great nieces & great nephews, great- great nieces and great-great nephews. Besides his parents his is preceded in death by a brother, Allen Gilkey, 1958, and a sister, Gladys (Kenny) Baker, 1982.
