According to his death certificate, he was born in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, the son of David Owen & Sarah (Charlton) Fields. In 1860, he was a farm laborer living with and/or working for sixty-two-year-old Margaret Anderson in Taylor Township, Fulton County.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Hollidaysburg, Blair County, April 7, 1865, as a private with Co. E, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry (a primarily Lancaster County company), and honorably discharged with his company January 31, 1866.

He married Jane G. Black ca. 1865 and fathered Jesse Woodward (b. 02/02/68), Anna Millie (b. 06/22/70 - married Robert H. Miller), and Wilson Oliver (b. 07/14/75). Cause of his death is listed as "pneumonia" with "grippe" a contributing factor.
