"In the passing of City Treasurer John F. Evans, Pomona loses a splendid citizen, a man upright in his dealings with his fellow man, one who had espoused the cause of righteousness and who sought in his daily life to exemplify it.
For more than a quarter of a century this good man had been a conspicuous figure in our midst, recognized as a man of moral worth and fixed integrity. In all these years he has rendered a valuable service to the community.
He gave freely of his time and energies to the public, particularly in church and school activities, seeking no remuneration, no reward, other that the satisfaction that he was contributing a service which would be helpful. It was his thought that encouragement and directions should be given the boys and girls, the youth of our community, and it was for them that he devoted his energies for years in Sunday school work, as a teacher and superintendent. As a member of the Board of Education he sought to better conditions and give every possible advantage in the training of the students, from the kindergarten age up to the high school graduate.
He was a pillar in the Methodist church, a liberal giver, a devoted worshiper, a faithful attendant at church services, and his daily life was in keeping with his profession. His loyalty was unquestioned. There is not stain on his escutcheon.
As a city official he served well and conducted the affairs of his office in a most satisfactory manner. His re-election to the office of city treasurer a few months ago was a just recognition of ability and fitness, and a tribute to his worth as a citizen. Truth, honesty, good ethics permeated his every act. His kindness, sincerity and humanity endeared him to his acquaintances. His was a long life of usefulness and service in doing good in the world"
