From his obituary:

His remains were interred in Centre, Monday, July 17th, beside the graves of two of his children. A big crowd witnessed the obsequies and the floral offerings were elaborate. Columbus C. Appleton was born at Collinsville, August 20, 1869. He was educated in the public schools of DeKalb county, finishing at Collinsville in 1889. In 1890 he moved to Centre and read law. Was admitted to Cherokee bar, July 21, 1890. September 18, 1896 was married to Miss Emma Dickson of Centre. Mrs. Appleton and daughter Mrs. Blake Speer survive him. He served as Mayor of Centre, 1897-8-9. In 1896 he became Elector on the Bryan & Sewell ticket, by virtue of the death of Mr. Sibert, the principal Elector, just before November election. Was appointed Register in Chancery, by R. B. Kelley, November 1898, but upon the death of Robert R. Savage, accepted Gov. Johnston's appointment as Judge of Probate, July 10, 1899. In 1904 he was defeated for State Solicitor by R. C. Hunt but bested Hunt six years later by 9 majority. After being retired for Solicitor, 1916, he moved to Fort Payne where he resided to the end.

At the time of his death, C.C. Appleton was a hopeful candidate for Circuit Judge, but the field is now left undeniably for the present incumbent Judge W.W. Haralson.
