BEACH Helen Bertha Hathaway, 101, of Lacey, Washington formerly of Beach, North Dakota, passed away in Lacey on Thursday, July 29, 2010.
Helen was born March 10, 1909 on the family farm tem miles from Westhope, North Dakota. Daughter of Henry D. And Lena (Von Readon) Wyman, she was the youngest of two sisters and three brothers. Helen attended a rural school a mile and a half from home where she completed seventh grade, then attended the Branden Consolidated School five miles from home where she earned her high school diploma. Helen then enrolled in the Minot State Normal School at Minot, N.D., receiving her teaching Certificate in 1929.
Helen taught school for sixteen years at Newburg, Carpio, Makoti and Beach, all in North Dakota. While teaching grade school, she was also in charge of the music programs for the grade school children, including an orchestra in three of the schools in which she taught. Helen played the violin, taking part in orchestra in high school and college. She also sang in choirs wherever she taught.
Helen came to Beach in 1940 and taught the upper classes until she married Donald Hathaway on December 28, 1946, after Don had returned from the service. They lived on a farm one half mile west of Beach which Don had purchased before entering the service. Don and Helen lived there until purchasing the Luther Hodges home in Beach in 1976. In 1994 they sold their home and moved to Panorama City, a retirement area in Lacey, WA.
Don and Helen had two sons while living on the farm: Dr. T. R. (Tom) Hathaway, who resides in Cool, California, and Richard Hathaway, who passed away in 1970.
Helen was confirmed in the Country Presbyterian Church near where the family lived. After Don and she were married they became members of the Congregational Church which is now the United Community Church in Beach. She took an active part in singing in the choir for over 40 years. Helen was also an active member of several groups and organizations. She was a member of the Women's Fellowship, acting as President twice. She also belonged to the Order of Eastern Star and Chapter C, P.E.O., serving in several offices including President. Helen enjoyed singing in the choir and especially the Beach Community Chorus directed my Irene Thompson, taking part in solo, duets and smaller groups.
When Don retired, they enjoyed traveling, seeing parts of the 50 states, including Alaska and Hawaii, enjoying old friends and making new ones.
Helen's husband, Don, a son Richard, her parents, two sisters and three brothers preceded her in death. She leaves to mourn her passing one son, Dr. T.R. (Tom) Hathaway and his wife Maren, two grandsons, Marc and his wife Denise, and Brock and his wife Sara; one great-grandson, Fletcher, all living in California; two step great-grandsons and one step great-great grandson all of California; a sister-in-law, ;Genevieve Hathaway of Lacey, Washington, and numerous nephews and nieces, and great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
